John Chapter 19 Study by SHALOM

John 19 Read John 19:1-6 1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face. 4Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" 6As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him." V 1 - Now realize that Jesus had not even been sentenced yet, and here they have illegally flogged Him. Pilate has Jesus flogged only to try and satisfy this blood thirsty mob. Flogging was usually done to bring about a confession of guilt, since Jesus was not guilty of anything and had nothing to confess, He was beaten more severely. The Jews had a limit of 39 lashes, Romans had no limits whatsoever. Isaiah 52:14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness— It has been suggested that all illnesses and diseases have 39 sources, which people say Jesus took 39 lashes, one for every disease, so we can be healed. I have found no proof of this. But I do know what 1 Peter 2:24 says…. 1 Peter 2:24 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. Think about this for a minute, by His wounds we are healed, and by His crucifixion we are redeemed and sanctified. Pilate says in verse 4 – “I find no basis for a charge against him.” Luke 23:16 - Therefore, I will punish him and then release him." Everything should have ended here. But the minute they see Him they yell “Crucify Him.” And again Pilate says “I find no basis for a charge against him.” Read John 19:7-12 7The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." 8When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" 11Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." 12From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." V 11 – Jesus is focused on God even in the midst of all that is happening to Him. Acts 3:13 13The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. V 12 – Pilate did try to free Jesus, but Jesus told him that the one who handed Him over had the greater sin. I think a lot of politicians buckle under the pressure like Pilate did, in the end they look for what pleases instead of doing what is right. Pilate has no idea of who Jesus really is, his only concern is to keep his position and keep Rome happy. Read John 19:13-16 13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. 15But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. 16Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. V 15 – The Jews are literally rejecting their Messiah, these are people who knew all the prophecies about Him, and here they are yelling for Him to be crucified. The Jewish leaders have such an unreasonable hatred towards Jesus, hatred warps a person’s ability to judge correctly. If they had only looked at Jesus through what the scriptures say about Him, then they would have welcomed Him with open arms. But since they rejected Jesus, Romans 11:7-10 7What then? What Israel sought so earnestly it did not obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, 8as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day." 9And David says: "May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. 10May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever." Read John 19:17-22 17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. 19Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.20Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews." 22Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." V 19 – Pilate does not give in to the Jewish rulers protest to take down the sign. I think God Himself would not allow it to be removed, because Jesus was, what the sign said He was, THE KING OF THE JEWS. In 1968, scientists for the first time discovered the remains of a man crucified in Jesus' era. The victim was nailed to the cross in a sitting position, both legs over sideways, with the nail penetrating the sides of both feet just below the heel. The arms were stretched out, each stabbed by a nail in the forearm. Dr. Nico Hass, Hebrew University anatomy professor says that this was "a compulsive position, a difficult and unnatural posture," evidently to increase the agony of the sufferer. This corrects the traditional envisioning of the crucifixion, with both palms nailed to the cross, and the legs stretching straight down with a nail piercing the feet frontally. Read John 19:23-24 23When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." So this is what the soldiers did. Psalm 22:18 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. Exodus 28:42-43 42 "Make linen undergarments as a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to the thigh. 43 Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. "This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants. I think people miss this fact about Jesus being crucified, He would have been stripped naked. When they crucified people, the Romans were trying to send a message, if you don’t obey the Roman government the penalty will be severe. Beatings, the torture of hanging there on a cross, sometimes it would take days for people to die from crucifixion. The whole time would have been agonizing and to be humiliated by being naked in front of the world. The placement of the Crosses was by a main road so everybody could see, and they would usually throw stones and spit on those who were being crucified and yell obscene things about them. V 24 – I can’t begin to imagine what is going through the mind of these soldiers, to be that concerned about not tearing a garment, and no concern for what they had just done to a human being. Read John 19:25-27 25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. V 26 - Even in the midst of complete torture, Jesus is concerned for His mother. Jewish law required the firstborn to provide for the parents, Jesus hands this task over to John. Jesus was no longer her Son but now He is her Savior. Even Jesus brothers were not sure about who He really was, it may have been hard for them to accept that their brother was God in the flesh. Psalm 69:8 8 I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons; Matthew 13:55-56 55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren't all his sisters with us? The people who followed Him up to this point are probably wondering why He doesn’t do something if He really is the Messiah. V 27 - John takes care of Mary from that point on. Read John 19:28-30 28Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. This wine vinegar would have been torture in and of itself, you have to imagine His mouth is dry and His tongue is swollen and sticking to the roof of His mouth, His lips are dry and cracked, taking wine vinegar at this point must have been horrific. What is finished? 1 Jesus fulfilled every Old Testament prophecy written about Him. 2 He fulfilled the law that no one else could. We now live by faith in His Grace. 3 All of Satan’s power is ripped away from him. Jesus took keys of death away. 4 Sin no longer holds us captive, the Adam nature is removed. 5 Death no longer has any claim to us who believe in Jesus. 6 God is Holy and demands payment for sin, the payment was now paid in full. 7 God relationship with mankind is restored. 2 Corinthians 5:21 21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Read John 19:31-37 31Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," 37and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced." It happened just as it was prophesied Psalm 34:20 20 he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. Jesus had to follow the law in every way to fulfill it, He as the Passover Lamb could not be left on the Cross till morning and His bones could not be broken, these are the regulations set forth in the law for Passover. Numbers 9:12 12 They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations. Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. The water and blood that flowed from His side was for the cleansing and redeeming of all who would call upon His name, and it brought the New Covenant, so we go from a law covenant to a grace covenant. Luke 22:20 20…………."This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Read John 19:38-42 38Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. 39He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. 40Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Isaiah 53:9 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. So what happened to Jesus while His body lay in a tomb? I Peter 3:18-20 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. Ephesians 4:8-10 8 This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." 9 (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)
