John Chapter 17 Study by SHALOM

John Chapter 17 If someone over heard you pray to God, what would they discover about you or God? We are going to read how Jesus prays here, by the way this is the longest prayer recorded that Jesus prayed, every time we read Jesus prayers we find out a little bit more about the character of God. The old covenant had a Priest to mediate between God and man. Jesus is Our High Priest. John16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Read John 17:1-3 1After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. First thing I notice is Jesus prayed with His eyes open. Sometimes I wonder if we are closing our eyes in prayer out of tradition or respect of God or to concentrate and focus on God. God can hear us if we have our eyes open or closed. It is interesting that the Bible never mentions anyone closing their eyes in prayer. When I look toward Heaven, I can’t help but focus on God. Jesus simply looked at the One He was talking to. Jesus had a personal relationship with God, He called God His Father. He called Himself God’s Son. First thing Jesus says is, “Father the time has come”. What time is He talking about? It is time for God’s ultimate plan for mankind, redemption through His only Son. V 2 Jesus claims authority over all people. He holds the destiny of all mankind in His hands. Jesus is asking God to glorify Him, which sounds selfish, but in reality it is not selfish at all. When Jesus is glorified it points people towards God. Jesus only desire is to glorify God. His mission is to restore the relationship that mankind once had with God, a personal relationship. God’s plan of salvation is simple, eternal life comes through Jesus Christ. If Jesus were not God, could He have prayed what He did? Isaiah 42:8 8 "I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. Isaiah 48:11 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another. This is another proof of who Jesus really is. 1 Corinthians 10:31 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. We too are to glorify God in everything we do, as Jesus did. Read John 17:4-5 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. Do we glorify God with the work He has given us to do? Or do we complain and mope about how we would rather be in another ministry. God never does a small thing, whatever He has given you to do is BIG. God uses ordinary people to do His work. You don’t have to have a college degree or be rich, I have heard people say so many times, myself included, if I was a millionaire I would do this or that, but in reality the person who gave the most in the Bible monetarily was the widow who gave her two mites, a fraction of a penny. Because it was everything this widow had to live on. God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here today. God can do great things through us if we get out of His way and do the work He has given us to do. In fact God has already prepared in advance for us to do good works. Ephesians 2:10 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. V 5 Jesus set aside the glory He had since before the world began, to come and change our eternal destiny. He left paradise to come and live on earth and give us what we do not deserve. Read John 17:6-8 6"I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. Just as Jesus revealed God to us, we need to reveal Jesus to others which is the Great Commission. I believe we are all called to share our faith. God gave us to Jesus and requires our obedience to Him. The Disciples may not have understood everything but look what Jesus says about them in His prayer, “They have obeyed your Word”. I think about God all day long and it affects everything that I do. It’s not just the fact that I will stand before God and give an account for the life I have lived, but it is how awesome God is and my knowledge of Him that I want others to know, He gives us so much, I never knew before coming to Christ that it was possible to have the peace that I know have. It literally affects every part of my existence. V 7 Do people know that everything we have comes from God? Or are we like the world, chasing after the wind? What do people see when they look at your life? I have a friend who is an alcoholic and he told me one day, “Jerry I want what you have” Referring to my Christian walk. I told him, he could have everything that I have in Christ if he were willing to surrender everything to Jesus. Everything in my life now is a direct result of what Jesus is doing in me, and others can see it. This is a man who new the old Jerry that I was. He can physically see what I believe by the way I live. V 8 Like the Disciples we too have accepted the Word of God and believed that Jesus was sent by God. Jesus taught the Disciples about the character of God, but He also lived the character of God. We can say to people “Jesus loves you” but we have to live it and show it. Jesus words and actions were one and the same. Read John 17:9-10 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. Isaiah 53:11-12 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Romans 8:33-34 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. V 10 No one but Jesus could say, “all you have is mine” because He was God in the flesh. Jesus is the only one who gets the glory, I know some who try and take credit for what God is doing and I am really scared for them. Read John 17:11-12 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. We remain in Christ by the power of Christ alone, not by our own efforts, this world likes to cater to our flesh and unless we have Christ we will fall into it’s snare. There is power in the name of Jesus. Jesus wants us to be one as He and the Father are One. Unfortunately even Christians have a different take on what that means, I see that Church as your congregation and my congregation, together we are the Church, any one who follows Jesus. In other words we all work for the same purpose together. But the modern theme seems to be you need to go to this denomination or that denomination, there are some who seem upset that I play drums at another Church, I am dedicated to Jesus Christ, not a denomination. The body of Christ is everywhere, not one location in a building somewhere. Most of our ministry should be outside the Church walls. V12 Jesus says none have been lost except one, Judas Iscariot, so that Scripture would be fulfilled. Zechariah 11:12-13 12 I told them, "If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"-the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter. Matthew 27:3-7 3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4"I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility." 5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. Read John 17:13-19 13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. Jesus is leaving this world and wants His Disiples to abide in His joy. V 14 The world is going to hate us, but God will protect us. Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, Of course the world will hate us, Satan wants us destroyed, he hates God’s chosen people. We are to be in the world but not of it, a boat is only useful on the water, but we don’t want the water in the boat, in the same way we are useful in the world but we don’t want the world inside us. We are merely passing through on our way home. V 17 Sanctified means to set apart for sacred use; consecrate, to make holy; purify God makes us holy by the Truth of His Word Jesus said in John 14:6 “I Am the Way the Truth and the Life” John 1:1 says “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God” Jesus Christ is the Truth and the Word, Jesus makes us holy and acceptable to God, God looks at us and see’s the sanctifying work of Jesus Christ. V18 We are to go into the world and spread the good news, just as Jesus came into the world. V 19 Jesus, who is sinless prayed, "For them I sanctify Myself", Jesus wasn't saying that He needs to be made holy, but that He sets Himself apart for the Father’s sacred will, to die on the cross for many. Hebrews 7:25 25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. That word completely can also be translated forever. It is so awesome to know that He is always interceding on our behalf. Read John 17:20-21 20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Jesus is literally praying for us right here. He knows the Disciples will fail momentarily but that people from their time down to the present time will believe the message of the Cross and be saved. His hope was not in the Disciples but He had confidence in the Holy Spirit's ability to transform these men. Jesus has set the highest of standards here, we are to be one, like He and the Father are One. Verses like these make me reevaluate were I am at to be sure I am right with my fellow Christians, we can’t be unified if there is division among us. We represent Jesus Christ to the lost and dying world. There is not one of us who is less or more than the other. If I ever offend any one of you, please come and tell me, I want to be right with you. Read John 17:22-23 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. The Greek word for glory here is Strongs concordance #1391 DOXA which means, dignity, glory, honor, praise, worship. We have the glory that the Father gave the Son, because the Son is in us, it was a glory that appeared humble and was displayed in sacrifice. Unity is found when we focus on Jesus. Read John 17:24-26 24"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them." It is so awesome to know that Jesus wants us to be with Him and to see His glory, I tell you whatever you have gone through in this life will be worth it if you go to be with Jesus when it’s all done and said. I think about loved ones who have passed on and how they are probably saying, “wait til they see all of this”. 1 Corinthians 2:8-10 8None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.9However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"— 10but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. The Apostle Paul is quoting Isaiah 64:4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. V 24 - Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image,……… God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, are all right here in Genesis. The Trinity of God. Jesus Himself wants to live in you, how much room do we give Him? Is He first in all our decisions? Do we call Him Lord or do we make Him Lord of our life? After this prayer He will be arrested and stand trial, He gave everything He had, He gave His very life for us so that we could be with Him for eternity. The least that we could do is make Him Lord of our life. Jesus prayed for Himself, for His Disciples, for all believers, for oneness among believers, for His Church to display His glory and for our unity based in love His prayer ends with the essentials of Christian living: Jesus and His love indwelling the believer. Look at the details of His prayer, That we may know the One True God, that we obey His Word, that we know everything comes from God, that we would glorify Him, that we may be one, that God would protect us, that we may have the full measure of His joy, that we are not of this world How can we know if our Church is practicing real Christianity? We have to compare their beliefs and practices to the Bible. Which is to say that we must know what the Bible says and not take someone’s word for it.
