John Chapter 16 Study by SHALOM

John Chapter 16 Read John 16: 1-4 1"All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. Can you imagine being thrown out of the Church because you preach the truth? We live in a time where you have different denominations trying to decide weather or not to allow homosexual preachers, I personally would leave a Church that would even consider something like that. People are trading the truth for a lie. 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. Jesus tells us that some of us will be martyred. During the Inquisition, the catholic religion killed millions, they killed anyone who opposed the pope, they burned them, threw them into prison, crippled them, and tortured them all in the name of God. The muslim’s have killed in the name of their false god. True Christians have never killed anyone in the name of God. The Apostle Paul even killed Christians before giving his life to Christ. All these people didn’t know God at all, otherwise they would never have done these things. I think it’s funny when people say Christianity is for weak minded people, when in reality it is for those who are ready to be killed for the truth, Jesus said we would be persecuted for our faith, time and time again in the Bible we are told those who endure to the end will be saved. Are these weak minded people? Read John 16: 5-7 5"Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. The Disciples are having a hard time trying to understand why Jesus has to go away, they have been with Him for three years now and want to stay with Him. These men left everything to follow Him and now He is leaving. I don’t think they could grasp what the Holy Spirit was going to do for them. The Holy Spirit will empower them to walk by faith not by sight. Read John 16: 8-11 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, man is unable realize his condition of sin, righteousness and judgment outside of the Holy Spirit. Someone once told me that I wasn’t a bad person before I came to Christ, and I said, then you don’t understand how Holy God is. John 16:9 in regard to sin. People who reject Christ are Hell bound because they have rejected the only plan of salvation. John 3:17-18 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. John 16:10 in regard to righteousness. Jesus is the standard of righteousness, when He goes to the Father, the Holy Spirit will have to take over speaking to our hearts about what righteousness is. John 16:11 in regard to judgment. There will be an everlasting judgment for those who follow Satan instead of Jesus. Satan has already been served his court papers and he will be tormented day and night for all eternity. Who would want to follow him? Read John 16: 12-15 12"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. Spirit of truth will come He will guide us in all truth He will not speak on His own He will speak what He hears He will tell us what is to come He will glorify Jesus He makes known the things of Jesus Read John 16: 16-18 16"In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." 17Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" 18They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." Jesus is referring to the fact that they would see Him in Heaven after a little while, makes me think how short life really is. They should have asked Him what He meant, He was right there with them, instead they asked each other. I think we sometimes turn to people when we should be turning to Jesus for answers, not that it’s bad to turn to people for help. Read John 16: 19-22 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? 20I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. This shows Jesus can answer our questions before we ever ask. In life we go through times of mourning while the sinful world around us is rejoicing, but we know that God will turn our weeping into eternal joy and the sinful world will have eternal weeping and mourning. Read John 16: 23-24 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. In the name of Jesus we can go ask God boldly and He will give us whatever we ask. Very simple : ask = receive Read John 16: 25-28 25"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." Jesus drives the point home about our access to God because of His name. Because we believed Jesus came from God and our love of Jesus, God loves us as His own. Now He tells them plainly that He is going back to the Father from whom He came. Read John 16: 29-33 29Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." 31"You believe at last!" Jesus answered. 32"But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Jesus loves us in spite of our lack of understanding, we have all been the one’s who lacked understanding at some point in our lives. Jesus can see the future that we can’t, He knows the Disciples will be scattered but He also knows the great things they will do for His name sake. We can know that we are never alone, but that Jesus is always there with us. In Jesus we will find our peace even in those times of trouble, this world is a defeated foe because of His awesome Sacrifice. We need to keep our focus on Jesus no matter what happens.
