John Chapter 15 Study by SHALOM

John Chapter 15 Read John 15:1-3 1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Jesus may have said this in view of the golden vine on the front of the temple. The vine represents the nation of Israel. Psalm 80:8-9 8 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. 9 You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land. Jesus says I Am the True Vine, Jesus is saying that He is the true Israel of God. The physical Israel vine which are the Jewish people, turned against the Spiritual Israel who was Jesus. Jeremiah 2:21 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? The true vine will no longer grow fleshly religious branches that bear no fruit, but rather it will have Spiritual branches that produce spiritual fruit. When these Spiritual branches produce fruit, they are pruned to produce even more Spiritual fruit. Hebrews 12:11 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. The Greek word katharos means cleans The Word is cleansing, it condemns sin; it promotes growth When God prunes us, or cleans us, He is getting rid of things that are not from Him and making us even more usable than before. Jesus says the Father is the Gardener, can you imagine God having a garden, there would be no weeds, nothing bad would grow in it and it wouldn’t be a matter of if the plants would grow, but rather what to do with all of the harvest. God is our Gardener and wants us to grow and be fruitful. Has God ever pruned you and made you more fruitful? Read John 15:4 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. All the branches get their nutrients from the main vine itself, which is Jesus. I think the modern Church has done a horrific job of producing fruit for God, I have seen a lot of Christians fighting other Christians, I think they would be wise to refocus on Jesus Christ and realize that they will never produce fruit for God outside of being obedient to Christ. How can you win the lost to Jesus when you can’t even get along with other Christians? It is impossible for a branch to rip itself away from the vine and think it will still produce any kind of fruit. Read John 15:5-8 5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. In Israel, when they plant a brand new Olive tree, it takes up to ten years for that tree to produce fruit, but if they take the branches off the new tree and graft them into the old tree, they will produce fruit the next year. The branch is completely dependant upon what it’s source is to produce fruit. In the same way God takes us out of sinfulness and grafts us into Jesus and as long as we remain in Jesus we will produce fruit, we are completely dependant upon Christ to give us what we need. He shows us very clearly what happens to those branches that don’t remain in Him, they are thrown into the fires of hell. His promise in verse 7 Bearing fruit shows we are Jesus Disciples and it’s all for the glory of God Read John 15:9-11 9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. You’ll notice Jesus says again and again to remain in Him, in fact He says to remain in Him 10 times from verse 4-11. He really wanted to drive this point home, you can’t do anything if you don’t remain in Him. He wants us to have joy that can only come from a life lived in Him and for Him. Through obedience, and love we experience the joy of Jesus Read John 15:12-14 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. Jesus is telling them that He is going to lay down His life for them and indeed all of us, notice the condition is if we do what He commands. I can’t tell how scared I am for some people I know who think all they need is fire insurance from Jesus and they don’t have to live for Him or do anything for Him, I know we are saved by grace, but if we are saved then our fruitfulness will shed some light on what we really believe. Our works are not our savior but rather an extension of what we believe. Read John 15:15-17 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other. Here they go from being servants to being friends, He has shared everything with them that the Father has taught Him. I worked at a paint shop for over 18 years, when I started there I was just another employee, I didn’t know anything about the owners business other than what I was asked to do, years later I became the Production Manager and ran the whole company, I knew everything about their business inside and out. People don’t just say, “here is my business, run it for me”. They had to get to know me and trust me before they chose me and appointed me to run their business, I made money for them and if I needed anything it was at my disposal, they still call me once in awhile. I went from being a servant to being their friends, so I understand what Jesus is saying here. Again He is driving the point home about loving each other. Read John 15:18-19 18"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. I am never surprised when I hear of attacks on Christianity because this world hates discipline and has the attitude of “if it feels good do it”, everybody is OK just let them do their thing, but Christianity says the opposite. What did Hebrews 12:11 say. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. The world wants ease and pleasure of the flesh, God desires us to be Spiritually clean. Romans 12:2 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. So we can expect the world to hate us because we will not conform to it. Read John 15:20-22 20Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. If Jesus is your Lord and Savior you can also expect persecution from the world. The world does not know God and now is without excuse for their sin. That is why it is vitally important for us to reach the world before they die in their sins. 2 Thessalonians 1:8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Read John 15:23-25 23He who hates me hates my Father as well. 24If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.' People claim they believe in God or a god, but if they reject Jesus Christ, they reject God. Not even signs and miracles will help some believe, they hate God without reason. Psalm 69:4 4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. Read John 15:26-27 26"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. 27And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit who comes from God, and through Him we share with others about Jesus. What is the Fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Funny how the message of Salvation is so awesome and yet some hate it with a passion.
