John Chapter 14 Study by SHALOM

John Chapter 14 Read John 14:1 1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. Now if we look at the previous chapter, the last thing Jesus tells Peter is that he will deny Him 3 times and now He’s saying, but don’t let your heart be troubled, just trust me. When they wrote the Bible there were no chapter or verse numbers, they were added to help us find scripture and remember where to look for things. So it’s as though chapter 13 flowed right into chapter 14 without stopping. Do we trust God when we pray? Is His answer enough for us? Read John 14:2-3 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. It is so awesome to know that Jesus Himself has gone to prepare a place for us and that He is coming back to take us there to be with Him. This show’s the value that God has put on us, we aren’t some accident that formed out of some cosmic soup millions of years ago, we are created by God and He has a plan for us. Let’s look at Ephesians. Ephesians 1:4-5 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will…… He chose us before the creation of the world. Read John 14:4-6 4You know the way to the place where I am going." 5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" 6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Thomas should not have been concerned how to get there, Jesus told them in verse 3 that He would come back for them. It is verses like this one, verse 6, that separate us from all other religions, Jesus is saying here, unless you come to God through me, you can’t come. The way is not a map, it is a relationship with Jesus. Jesus says He is the ONLY way to God, The ONLY way to Heaven, the ONLY way we can be saved. That is not a very popular teaching in the modern world were we have people like oprah winfrey and others who claim there are thousands of ways to God. We see people who are into interfaithism, they say all religions lead to the same God. They can’t possibly have the same God that we have, they’re religions contradict what God says. God says in Exodus. Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me. Read John 14:7-10 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Philip says show us the Father, Jesus says don’t you know me, Philip. We see in Jesus Christ the very character and nature of God. I have seen this in the Church I used to go to, people really don’t know who Jesus is even after hearing all the sermons, Bible Studies. They seem to have an outward appearance of religion and not a relationship with Jesus. They don’t put into practice what is being taught, and they are running off the flesh not the Spirit. When our Church split, I seen a lot of back biting and gossip, so much so that I couldn’t believe my ears. Some people drop everything, including Christianity when they are offended. Oddly enough, the biggest thing that keeps Christians out of Church are other Christians. John 1:1 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Jesus is the Word, Jesus is God in the flesh. Just as God is in the Son, the Son sent us the Holy Spirit of God, and He will guide us in all Truth, Jesus even said I Am the Truth. Our words should be what we hear from the Holy Spirit of God, not our own. Read John 14:11-14 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. Again we read Jesus talking about belief. He says right here that anyone who has faith in Him WILL do what He did and even greater things. When we come to faith in Jesus, we will do good works, not because we are trying to earn a way to Heaven, but because it is living what we believe. Jesus is expecting them to carry on where He left off. Peter brought more people to Christ than was recorded in Jesus entire ministry. Verse 13 Jesus says it’s all about bringing Glory to God. I love John 14:14, if you know me at all, you’ll notice that I quote this scripture a lot. Jesus said it, I believe it, notice He says I WILL do it, not maybe or might or there’s a chance, He says I Will Do It. We need to be sure our prayer request are based on God getting the glory, and Jesus says He will do it. Read John 14:15 15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. Do we understand what the greatest command is? Matthew 22:37-39 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. The greatest command is to love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. If we really love Jesus the result will be obeying his commands. Read John 14:16-17 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. The word Counselor is translated from the Greek parakletos: "a person summoned to one's aid," and may refer to an advisor, a legal defender, a mediator or an intercessor. Jesus says here in verses 16-17 the Father gives us the Spirit of Truth forever. I believe we receive the Spirit of Truth the minute we are saved. The work Jesus told the Disciples to carry on would be impossible without the Holy Spirit. Read John 16:7-11 if time allows. Read John 16:7-11 7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. We should not be surprised by the worlds reaction to truth, they are spiritually dead. The world won’t accept what they can’t see and feel. We get mad when politicians make stupid decisions, but in reality many of them are ignorant to the truth. The Disciples came right out of Old Testament times when God dwelled in the Holy Of Holies, then they experienced Jesus (God in the flesh) Then they would have experienced the Holy Spirit, they knew the Tinity of God very well. We see again that we need a personal relationship with God. God’s Holy Spirit is not only with us, He lives inside of us. When Jesus said tear down this Synagogue and I will rebuild it in three days, what He was saying is, God no longer dwells in Temples made by human hands, He desires to dwell inside us. We are the new Temples, knowing this should be very sobering to all of us. Read John 14:18 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. It’s funny how Jesus used the word orphans, remember what Ephesians said. Ephesians 1:5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ. He won’t leave us as orphans but He will adopt us as orphans. Jesus will never abandoned us. Read John 14:19-24 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." 22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?"23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. If we love Jesus, we will be recognized by our obedience to Him. I think Love and obedience go hand in hand, we can’t love Jesus and not be obedient to him. We need to be sensitive to the heart of God, and ask ourselves in any given situation “What would Jesus do”? These promises of Jesus don’t mean we will never again have to go through a storm in our lives, but it is good to know that He is there when the storm comes. Read John 14:25-26 25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Wow, the Holy Spirit will teach us all things, that is so awesome to me that God sends us the Counselor, What does a counselor do? They advise us on any given situation. What to do, how to do it, where to go, who to see, what to say. It is very clear we can’t serve God without the help of God. Read John 14:27 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. I think that if the world knew what they were missing they would give everything they have to get what God has freely given us. It can’t be bought, it is not earned or deserved. We can have peace now and we need not fear anything or anybody. But what if I die? I am going to paradise, Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for us. I had no peace at all before coming to Christ. I had what I would say was a false peace. But after I got saved I was telling people, I never knew this kind of peace existed. In recorded history this world has only had 80 years of peace, since 1945 alone there have only been 26 days of world wide peace, but in the midst of it all, we can have peace that only comes from God. Read John 14:28-29 28"You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. The Father is greater than the Son in position (regarding the incarnation), not in essence. Again Jesus says so that you will believe, Jesus must have known it would be hard for people to believe because we are so entrenched by this world and not on God. Read John 14:30-31 30I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave. Even knowing He was about to be crucified, Jesus is comforting the Disciples. Jesus talks about His Father 53 times in chapters 13-17. It was all about bringing glory to God.
