John Chapter 12 Study by SHALOM

John chapter 12 Read John 12:1-3 Notice they are six days away from celebrating the Passover, soon Jesus will become the Passover Lamb. This chapter is the start of Jesus last week before His death. Mary's gift was extravagant: she gave a costly, rich gift. Frequently, spices and ointments were used as an investment because they were portable and were easily negotiable in the open market (300 denarii equaled a year's wages). They earned 1 denarii a day. 17 cents. We talked about this last week, but think how much you earn in one year, would you be willing to measure your love for Jesus by that amount? He is worth our very best offering. Mary’s gift was humble, usually, the head was anointed. The Gospels record Mary being at Jesus’ feet 3 different times. She was humbly worshipping Jesus. 1 Corinthians 11:15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. We see Mary use her hair or her glory, to wipe the feet of Jesus Last week we seen how Mary came to Jesus and fell at His feet. John 11:32. There are numerous times we see people falling to the feet of Jesus. Philippians 2:10-11 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I see a picture of the Church here in the first three verses: Martha – Serving - which is a characteristic of Jesus. Isaiah 53:11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied ; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. Lazarus – Witnessing - Lazarus had first hand account of the real deal. How can you witness about someone you do not know. We have to know Jesus. Acts 1:8-9 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. This the last thing Jesus says before He goes up to Heaven, “you will be my witnesses”. Mary – Worshipping - Some people think worshipping during a service is just singing a few songs, their heart is not really in it. But in reality it is pouring your heart and soul into rejoicing in your Spirit at who GOD is and what Jesus has done for us. John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." God said to the Israelites in the old Testament Amos 5:21-22 21 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. What is God saying to them? You are doing all these religious things and your heart is not even in it, it is just another daily routine thing for them, and it was meaningless to GOD. Read John 12:4-8 Here we have Judas who in a few short days will betray Jesus. Outward appearances can be deceptive; many people have a religious mask that hides their real motivation and sin. Judas had a sense of financial values, but no concept of human values. Are we like Mary, extravagant in our love for Jesus, or are we like Judas, criticizing others who are? Judas had no concern for the poor, his only concern was himself. He would take from the money bag for himself as though there were no consequences. This reminds me of someone I know who complained that I sponsored a child in another country. Her complaint was that we have starving children right here in America, why give to them. I said which organization do you give to, she replied “I don’t give to any” to which I replied, I give to feed the children, which feeds children right here in America. Why on earth would someone complain when they haven’t done anything in the first place to help that cause? We need to seriously think about our own motives, less we become another Judas. Look at Jesus’ response to Judas “Leave her alone”. Jesus seen right through Judas. I think Jesus next statement says a lot too, we will always have issue’s in this world but we need to spend time with Jesus regardless of what is going on. We need to spend time at the feet of Jesus like Mary. Read John 12:9-11 At this point everybody wants to see Lazarus and the one who raised him to life. Lazarus has become a living testimony to who Jesus is and the Pharisee’s once again pop into action, not only to kill Jesus but also Lazarus. They are so far gone that they are willing to kill a man who was raised from the dead. They wanted to get rid of the evidence. People again began to put their faith in Jesus and the Pharisee’s couldn’t stand it. Read John 12:12-19 Mat 21:1-11 - Mk 11:1-11 - Lk 19:29-44 (Other accounts of the Triumphal Entry) Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Palm branches were a symbol of Jewish nationalism since the time of the Maccabees; this is a patriotic rally. The waving of palm branches and crying of Hosanna, or `save now', was a tradition which had its roots 200 years previously, following the reign of a bloodthirsty Syrian king named Antiochus Epiphanes. A man so blasphemous that he slaughtered a pig in the Holy of Holies and made the priests drink its blood, Antiochus bludgeoned the Jews into submission. After several years of this, a man named Judas Maccabee had enough. Maccabee, whose name meant `hammer', and his brothers decided to nail Antiochus, so they launched a war against him. Approximately nine years later, Maccabee and his band of renegades overcame the Assyrian army and drove Antiochus from Jerusalem, the people celebrated by waving palm branches. From that time on, the back of Jewish coinage depicted a palm branch as a symbol of deliverance from oppression. In John's account, 200 years later, the Jews find themselves oppressed again by the Romans. In essence when they cried Hosanna and waved palm branches as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, they were saying, “Save us”. Deliver us from the Romans.' But they didn’t realize Jesus came not to save them from the Romans, but to save them from their sins. I think it’s important for Christians to understand what God is doing in the midst of a crashed economy, and a wacked out oppressive government. God is not surprised at all by what is happening in the world, He know’s, I think He wants us to draw near to Him. One day the governments and the politicians of this world will seize to exist, and knowing Jesus will be the only thing that matters. Romans 14:11 It is written: " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' " Verse 16 we see the disciple didn’t understand until later what had actually taken place. Once again the Pharisee’s are scared that the whole world is following Jesus. You can almost feel the intensity of their anger towards Jesus growing. Read John 12:20-26 Jesus never really responds to the Greeks, but will on the other side of the cross. If these Greeks, as well as others, are to receive the new life He is offering, then Jesus must die first. It’s almost like the interest of the Greek Gentiles was a sign to Jesus that the hour had come for Him to be Glorified. You can see the good news is spreading like fire now that the Gentiles are inquiring of who Jesus is. Verse 24 A seed has to die before it can become a new plant, which in turn will produce many more seeds. The Seed Jesus is talking about is Himself, Jesus has to die bearing our sin upon Himself to undo the sin DNA of the first Adam, we are all the seed of Adam and Eve, meaning we are born into sin. In other words sin produces sin. But Jesus the Second Adam had no sin and when He dies, He produces many sinless seeds, which are those who would believe upon Him, born of the Spirit. Spirit produces Spirit. The seed brings new life, Jesus brings Eternal life. Verse 25 If we go through life fulfilling what are sin nature desires and give no thought to what Jesus has done for us, we will lose our opportunity to go to Heaven. But the man who gives his life to serving Jesus and doing the will of God will have Eternal life. Jesus tells us that God Himself will honor us for serving Him. We can’t love this world more than Jesus. Read John 12:27-36 Verse 27, 28 Jesus knows the scale of what He is about to go through, His love for us and desire to do the will of the Father overrides any desire to be saved from this hour. It was for us that He came into the world. I have heard people say that God doesn’t care about them, but they don’t realize the scale of what Jesus has done for them. He not only made us but He also bought us with His own blood, we are doubly His. In this hour Jesus turns to God in prayer, we need to follow His example, when we are tempted or going through trials, God can give us peace in that moment. Verse 29 This is the third time in the Bible that there was an audible voice from Heaven concerning Jesus, and Jesus says it was for the benefit of those who heard it. 1) Matthew 3:17 at the baptism, 2) Matthew 17:5 at the Mount of Transfiguration. Each time there was an audible voice from Heaven it had to do with His death. In baptism, Jesus was saying, `I submit to the death and burial I know awaits Me.' On the Mount of Transfiguration, Luke tells us He talked with Moses and Elijah about His death (Luke 9:31). And verse 27, Jesus says the hour has come. I met a man who came back from the dead and he said the voice of God was like a raging river and thunder, so fierce that it put Him flat on his face. Howard Pittman Jesus tells us that Satan is about to be driven out, Satan and his demons have no power over you unless you allow him too. Don’t let him steal your joy and peace. Verse 32 This was prophesied by Isaiah Isaiah 52:13 13 See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted John 8:28 and John 3:14 also mention Jesus being lifted up The Greek word that we translate as lifted up (hypsothenai) has a deliberate double meaning; it signifies not only literal elevation (Crucified) but also “exalted” (Glorified). Verse 35 Jesus goes on to tell the people that He (the Light) will be with them for a little longer, and that they should put their trust in the light (Jesus). We need to accept Jesus while we can, there will come a day when the opportunity will no longer be there. II Corinthians 6:2 2For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation. Read John 12:37-50 Isaiah 53:1 - Isaiah 6:10 (John is quoting from Isaiah) We have to be careful not to allow ourselves to get to a point where we harden our hearts toward God. There comes a time when God will strengthen us in our decision, whether for or against Jesus: we get what we want. The people had closed their eyes, stopped their ears, and hardened their hearts. They had shut their eyes to every sign, misconstrued every spiritual message, scorned every revelation of himself as the Shepherd, the Door, the Light, the Bread of Life, etc., Having so hardened themselves, they inevitably suffered the penalty of God's judicial hardening, making them no longer capable of believing. Romans 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. Verse 43 Do we like praise from men more than praise from God? Are we willing to let the truth of God fall to the way side so that we can have a good standing with men? I know people who think I’m too into Jesus, I would rather be a Jesus freak on my way to Heaven than to deny Jesus and be on my way to hell. What could be worth going to hell over, certainly not the praise of another person? Is it possible to be a secret follower of Jesus? Only temporarily; either the secrecy will cancel the belief, or the belief will cancel the secrecy. We need faith in and a relationship with Jesus. Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven plain and simple, He who embraces His Word will have everlasting life. Verse 47 He came to save the world from sin, but when He comes back, He will destroy all who do evil. He left as a Lamb and comes back as a Lion.
