John Chapter 11 Study by SHALOM

John Chapter 11 Read John 11:1-3 Why didn’t the sisters just say "Lazarus is sick”? Lazarus and Jesus were so close they didn’t even have to mention his name to Jesus. Instead they say “the one you love”, I think this is a picture of our need to have a personal relationship with Jesus so He can say I know you on the day we see Him face to face. In those days when the Jews said they know something, they didn’t mean they know about something, they meant they knew all there is to know about that thing. In other words if they said they know how to build a boat, they could tell you every aspect of building a boat. All the supplies you’ll need, they knew the whole “How To” from beginning to end. In the same way we can know about Jesus or we can “Know Jesus”. I know about George Bush, but I don’t “know him”. John12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. She would have poured about a years wages on His feet. The perfume was imported from the mountains of India, that’s why it was so costly. Jesus said that she was saving it for His burial Read John 11:4-6 So Jesus hears about Lazarus and purposely waits 2 more days before going there. Jesus knew that Lazarus was going to die if He didn’t heal him, but He also knew if He let him die He would be glorified through Lazarus death. I think sometimes we get anxious about a prayer not being answered in our timing. Read John 11:7-10 The disciples can’t understand why Jesus would want to go to a place were people want to kill Him. They were approximately 2 miles from Judea already, far enough not to alarm the Pharisee’s, but still very close. Aint it funny how the disciples talk about stoning and Jesus starts talking about lighting. Jesus tells them that the daylight which is His earthly ministry is still available and while it is still available there is work to be done, but that night is coming, which is when Jesus died on the Cross and the disciples would not have Jesus there with them. Basically what Jesus was saying is that time is short and there are still things that He needed to do in order to fulfill His ministry while still in the flesh and He had to fulfill the scriptures about Him. Everyone has a limited period of time here on earth to advance the kingdom of God. That period of time is our "daylight." Read John 11:11-15 We know that God who created everything is able to resurrect anybody, so to God, Lazarus is just sleeping. The disciples must have stunned to here Jesus speak of a dead man as though he were only sleeping. He’s telling them that He is going to do something to increase there faith. I can’t imagine how tired Jesus must have been continually telling them what God is capable of doing. They know Jesus and seen Him do all these things and still they are like “wait a minute Jesus” “they are going to stone you” “If Lazarus is sleeping he’ll get better”. It’s kind of a picture of how we need to trust God when He’s telling us to do something and the circumstances look as though it is impossible. Read John 11:16 Here we see Thomas who would later be called “doubting Thomas” because he wouldn’t believe Jesus rose from the dead until he put his finger in Jesus side. They lack understanding because at this point they still think that Jesus will be stoned and Thomas is saying; “let’s go die with Him” to the other disciples. Are we willing to die for what we believe? I went to Ecuador on a missions trip and there were people there who told us about missionaries in the past who would put all they’re belongings in a casket and go to some remote part of the world where they would most likely be killed trying to tell people about Jesus. These were people who knew the voice of they’re Shepherd, to live or die, they would risk all for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Read John 11:17-20 Martha comes out to greet Jesus and Mary stays at home. Remember, Mary is the one who stayed at Jesus feet listening to Him while Martha was busy getting things ready and complained to Jesus about Mary not helping. (Luke 10:38-42) Now we see Mary is distraught that Jesus did not prevent Lazarus’ death. Read John 11:21-27 Can you imagine the conversations Martha and Mary had before and after Lazarus died? "Will He come soon?" "When will He come?" "Will He come in time?" to "Why didn't He come in time?" "How could He not come?") Look at Martha’s words, “if you had been here”, she knows that Jesus could have healed Lazarus, then she says “but even now God will give you whatever You ask”. Her misunderstanding is that God is everywhere, Jesus didn’t have to physically be there for Lazarus to live, look at the story of the Centurion. Matthew 8:8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. Verse 24 She says “I know he will rise again at the resurrection at the last day”. Here Martha is referring to what John spoke of later in Revelation. Revelation 20:4-5 4I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. This is the event that precedes the Rapture. Verse 26 Jesus says that if you believe you will never die. If you were Martha, would you have said, "Wait a minute, how do you explain that Lazarus died and he believed in you?" She may have been confused at this point, she may have thought, “I don’t understand it all but I trust you Jesus”. Jesus tells her that He is the Resurrection and the Life. It’s so awesome to know that even death has no victory over the one who believes in Jesus. Verse 27 Martha calls Jesus, Lord, Christ which means Messiah and Son of God, all in one sentence. Martha believed Jesus was everything He claimed to be. Read John 11:28-32 Now Mary hears that Jesus is asking for her and she goes to Him quickly, again it is very easy to see how close these sisters were to Jesus, they just said “The Teacher is here” and Mary knew who they were talking about. Mary says the same thing Martha said earlier, “Lord if You had been here”. It’s like telling Jesus His timing was off. Read John 11:33-37 Verse 35 is the shortest verse in the Bible and yet it says so much about Jesus. Jesus felt compassion and sorrow. He can sympathize with us because He felt everything that we could ever go through, we have a Savior who cares about our physical, emotional, and spiritual sate. The Jews could see the love Jesus had for Lazarus, but they still questioned His abilities. Read John 11:38-44 Jesus says take away the stone, the first thing Martha is concerned with is the smell, her human thinking getting in the way. By waiting for the body to start decomposing, He left no doubt that this could not be some trick. Jesus was about to do something that would shake Martha and Mary to the core, there understanding and faith surely increased to new levels at this point. What He did glorified God and it was done for the benefit of those who were there, that they may believe God sent Jesus. We know Lazarus was raised from the dead but he would have died again and will be resurrected for good at the First Resurrection in Revelation 20:5. Read John 11:45-48 Can you imagine how astonished these Jews must have been? Still we see two very different responses to what has taken place. Many believed and put their faith in Him. Still others, after seeing this, ran straight to the Pharisee’s and told them. The Pharisee’s admit Jesus is doing many miracles, but are afraid everyone will believe in Him and cause the Romans to take their nation away. Some people are so hardened in their hearts that not even a miracle would cause them to believe. Read John 11:49-53 Caiaphas is prophesying and don’t even know it. Jesus Sacrifice was not only for the Jews, but for the scattered children of God, to make both Jew and Gentile one in Christ. We read that in the last chapter… John 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. Isaiah 49:6 he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth." You’ll notice through out the New Testament they always say first for the Jew and then for the Gentile. Salvation was offered to the Jews first, as a nation they rejected Jesus, then the message went to the Gentiles. Verse 53 tells us they plotted to take Jesus life. In reality they didn’t take His life, Jesus gave it willingly because it was God’s will, Jesus said in the Garden of Gethsemene “ Father, not my will, but yours be done”. Read John 11:54-57 Jesus went away because it was not yet His time to be Crucified, those Pharisee’s could not get a hold of Jesus until God said “O.K. it’s time”. The Passover refers to the fact that God “passed over” the houses of the Jews when He was slaying the firstborn of Egypt. Only the Egyptians lost their firstborn. Exodu12:12-13 "On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. Questions 1) What is the main purpose of Jesus allowing Lazarus to die? Verse 4 2) What does Jesus desire from us in the verses 15, 25, 26, 40, 42 ? 3) What is the result of the miracle Jesus performed? Verse 45 4) What was the prophecy about in verse 51, 52 ? Jesus example in John chapter 11 shows us that we need to glorify God in what we do, we need to believe in His Son and put our faith in Him. It is because of His Perfect Sacrifice of dying on the Cross that we can become one body and go to be with Him for all Eternity.
